方式副词 Adverbs of manner

Words like quickly and slowly tell how something happens. These are adverbs of manner—they describe verbs (action words).

How to make adverbs (副词构成):

• Adjective + ly: quick → quickly, slow → slowly, careful → carefully
• If adjective ends in y: happy → happily, easy → easily, busy → busily
• If adjective ends in le: terrible → terribly, possible → possibly
• Irregular: good → well, fast → fast (no change), hard → hard (no change)

Position in sentences (副词位置):

• Usually after the verb: She ran quickly.
• After verb + object: He did his homework carefully.
• Can move to beginning for emphasis: Slowly, the door opened.

Common adverbs of manner (常见方式副词):

• slowly / quickly: speed
• carefully / carelessly: attention to detail
• happily / sadly: mood while doing action
• loudly / quietly: sound level
• easily / difficulty: how hard something is
• well / badly: quality of action

Comparing adverbs (副词比较级):

• Short adverbs: faster, slower, harder
• Long adverbs: more carefully, more quickly, more slowly
• Irregular: better (from well), worse (from badly)

Example dialogue:
A: Can you speak more slowly? I can't understand you.
B: Sorry! I'll speak more clearly. Am I talking too fast?
A: Yes, but your English is good! You speak well.

Common mistake: Don't use adjectives when you need adverbs.
