Some actions happen quickly, others slowly. Some are regular, others are one-time. Adverbs of frequency tell how often you do things.
Common frequency adverbs (从最频繁到最不频繁):
- always: 100% of the time (太阳总是升起)
- usually: about 80% of the time (通常情况)
- often: about 60% of the time (经常)
- sometimes: about 40% of the time (有时)
- rarely/seldom: about 10% of the time (很少)
- never: 0% of the time (从不)
Sentence pattern (频率副词的位置):
- Before main verbs: I usually eat breakfast at 7.
- After 'be' verbs: She is always late for class.
- Can move to beginning for emphasis: Sometimes I walk to school.
Asking about frequency:
- How often do you...? -- Answer with frequency adverbs
- How many times a day/week do you...? -- Answer with numbers
Example dialogue:
A: How often do you exercise?
B: I usually run three times a week, but sometimes I swim.
A: Do you ever eat junk food?
B: Rarely. I never eat fast food, but sometimes I have chocolate.
Time expressions (时间表达):
- every day / every week / every month
- once a day / twice a week / three times a month
- on weekdays / on weekends
- in the morning / in the afternoon / in the evening
- at noon / at night / at midnight
