比较级与最高级 Comparison

Comparatives compare two things. Superlatives compare three or more things. They help you say which is bigger, smaller, better, or worse.

Comparative rules (比较级):

• One-syllable adjectives: + er → fast → faster, big → bigger
• One-syllable ending vowel+consonant: double final letter → big → bigger, hot → hotter
• Two-syllable ending y: y → ier → happy → happier, easy → easier
• Two+ syllables: more + adjective → beautiful → more beautiful, careful → more careful
• Irregular: good → better, bad → worse, far → farther, much/many → more

Superlative rules (最高级):

• One-syllable: + est → fast → fastest, big → biggest
• Double final letter: big → biggest, hot → hottest
• Two-syllable ending y: y → iest → happy → happiest
• Two+ syllables: most + adjective → most beautiful, most careful
• Irregular: good → best, bad → worst, far → farthest, much/many → most

Sentence patterns:

• Comparative: A is ___er than B → The cat is faster than the mouse.
• Superlative: A is the ___est → The cheetah is the fastest animal on land.
• Twice as...as: It's twice as big as that one.
• Half as...as: This one is half as expensive.

Common mistakes:

• ❌ more bigger → ✅ bigger (don't use both more and -er)
• ❌ the most fast → ✅ the fastest (short adjectives use -est, not most)
• ❌ best than → ✅ better than (use comparative with than, not superlative)

Example conversation:
A: Which is bigger, the elephant or the giraffe?
B: The elephant is heavier, but the giraffe is taller. Which animal is the biggest on land?
A: The blue whale is the biggest animal in the world, but it lives in the ocean.
B: Oh right! On land, the African elephant is the largest animal.
