Is the food good or bad? Is the room big or small? Adjectives describe nouns—they tell what something is like.
Size adjectives (尺寸):
- big / large: not small (大的)
- small / little: not big (小的)
- tiny: extremely small (极小的)
- huge / enormous: extremely big (巨大的)
Opinion adjectives (评价):
- good / great / excellent: positive
- bad / terrible / awful: negative
- nice / lovely: pleasant and good
- boring: not interesting
- interesting: holds your attention
- exciting: makes you feel excited
Appearance adjectives (外观):
- beautiful / pretty: looks nice (usually for people/things)
- handsome: good-looking (usually for men)
- ugly: not nice looking (avoid this word—it's rude!)
- clean / dirty: washed or not washed
- new / old: recently made or not
Personality adjectives (性格):
- happy / sad: emotions
- friendly: acts like a friend
- shy: quiet around people
- brave: not afraid
- smart / clever: intelligent
- kind: nice to others
- lazy: doesn't want to work
Using two adjectives:
- Opinion before fact: a beautiful new dress (not new beautiful dress)
- Size before color: a big red apple
Order rule (形容词顺序): Opinion Size Age Shape Color Origin Material Purpose
- Example: a nice small old round brown French wooden cooking table
(You'll almost never use this many adjectives together!)
