Is the food good or bad? Is the room big or small? Adjectives describe nouns—they tell what something is like.

Size adjectives (尺寸):

  • big / large: not small (大的)
  • small / little: not big (小的)
  • tiny: extremely small (极小的)
  • huge / enormous: extremely big (巨大的)

Opinion adjectives (评价):

  • good / great / excellent: positive
  • bad / terrible / awful: negative
  • nice / lovely: pleasant and good
  • boring: not interesting
  • interesting: holds your attention
  • exciting: makes you feel excited

Appearance adjectives (外观):

  • beautiful / pretty: looks nice (usually for people/things)
  • handsome: good-looking (usually for men)
  • ugly: not nice looking (avoid this word—it's rude!)
  • clean / dirty: washed or not washed
  • new / old: recently made or not

Personality adjectives (性格):

  • happy / sad: emotions
  • friendly: acts like a friend
  • shy: quiet around people
  • brave: not afraid
  • smart / clever: intelligent
  • kind: nice to others
  • lazy: doesn't want to work

Using two adjectives:

  • Opinion before fact: a beautiful new dress (not new beautiful dress)
  • Size before color: a big red apple

Order rule (形容词顺序): Opinion Size Age Shape Color Origin Material Purpose

  • Example: a nice small old round brown French wooden cooking table
(You'll almost never use this many adjectives together!)

Practice: Describe 3 things near you using adjectives. Example: "My pencil case is blue and small."
