Every action in life has a name in English. Knowing common action words (verbs) helps you describe what you do every day.

Morning routine actions:

  • wake up: to stop sleeping
  • get up: to leave your bed
  • brush (teeth): clean teeth with a toothbrush
  • wash (face): clean your face
  • get dressed: put on clothes
  • eat (breakfast): have morning meal
  • leave (home): go out of your house
  • catch (bus/train): get on before it leaves
  • arrive (school): get to school

Work/study actions:

  • open (book/notebook): ready to read or write
  • read: look at and understand written words
  • write: make letters and words on paper or screen
  • listen: pay attention to sound
  • speak: use voice to say words
  • ask: make a question
  • answer: give a reply
  • think: use your brain
  • learn: get new knowledge or skill

Afternoon/Evening actions:

  • finish: end something
  • go home: return to house
  • do (homework): do school work after class
  • play: do something for fun
  • watch (TV): look at television
  • cook: make food
  • eat (dinner): have evening meal
  • take (shower): wash body
  • go to bed: get ready to sleep

Tip: Many action words can pair with different nouns: eat breakfast, eat lunch, eat dinner; brush hair, brush teeth. Learn patterns, not just single words.
