Houses, homes, and living spaces have specific vocabulary. These words help you describe where you live and the things inside it.
Types of housing (住房类型):
- house: separate building for one family (with yard)
- apartment / flat: unit in a larger building (many families)
- studio apartment: one big room (bedroom + living room together)
- dormitory / dorm: student housing shared with others
- villa: large luxury house with garden
- cottage: small house in countryside
- townhouse: house attached to neighbors in a row
Rooms in a house (房间):
- living room / sitting room: relax, watch TV, welcome guests
- bedroom: sleep, keep clothes and personal things
- kitchen: cook food
- dining room: eat meals (sometimes combined with kitchen)
- bathroom / washroom: wash, shower, toilet
- restroom / toilet / WC: room with toilet only
- study / home office: room for work and reading
- balcony: outside platform you can stand on
- basement: floor below ground (storage)
- attic: space under roof (storage)
Furniture (家具):
- sofa / couch: soft long seat for 2-3 people
- armchair: chair with sides for arms
- coffee table: low table in living room
- dining table: table for eating
- desk: table for working/studying (with chair)
- bed: furniture for sleeping
- wardrobe / closet: tall cabinet for clothes
- bookshelf: holds books
- cabinet / cupboard: storage with doors
- shelf: flat horizontal surface for things
Appliances (家电):
- refrigerator / fridge: keeps food cold
- freezer: makes ice, keeps food frozen
- stove / cooker: cook food (gas or electric)
- microwave: heats food quickly with waves
- dishwasher: washes dishes automatically
- washing machine: washes clothes
- dryer: dries clothes
- television / TV: watch programs
- air conditioner / AC: cools air
- heater: warms room in winter
- vacuum cleaner: cleans floors by suction
