When meeting new people or in formal situations, greetings and introductions make good first impressions.

Formal introduction (正式介绍):

A: Mr. Smith, I'd like to introduce our new marketing manager, Ms. Li Na.
B: Ms. Li, it's a pleasure to meet you! I'm John Smith from the New York office.
C: The pleasure is mine, Mr. Smith. I've heard so many good things about your work on the American campaign.
B: Thank you, that's very kind. Please, call me John. Is this your first time in New York?
C: Yes, it's my first business trip to the US. I'm looking forward to working with the New York team.
B: Wonderful! We're having a welcome dinner tonight at 7. I hope you can join us.
C: I'd be delighted to! Thank you for inviting me.

Casual introduction (朋友间介绍):

A: Hey, have you two met? This is my roommate Xiao Gang.
B: Hi Xiao Gang, I'm Da Wei. Nice to finally meet you! Your roommate talks about you all the time.
C: All good things I hope, haha!
B: Mostly good, haha! So what do you study here?
C: I'm studying civil engineering. What about you?
B: I'm a mechanical engineering major too, but different year.
C: Oh cool! Maybe we have some classes together. Do you have Professor Wang for physics?
B: Yes! I have him on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. He's great but gives so much homework!
C: Tell me about it... I spend 3 hours every night on his problem sets.

Small talk starters (闲聊开场白):

Weather talk (safe anywhere!):

• "I heard it might rain tomorrow."

At a party or event:

• "How do you know [host]?"
• "What do you think of the event?"
• "Have you tried the food?"

At school or work:

• "What are you studying/working on?"
• "How long have you been here?"
• "Where are you from originally?"
