The Boy Who Cried Wolf

A shepherd boy watched his sheep on a hill every day. The work was quiet and boring. One day, he had an idea for some fun.

「Wolf! Wolf! A wolf is coming!」 he shouted. The farmers in the village heard him. They dropped their work and ran up the hill to help. But there was no wolf. The boy laughed and laughed. What a good joke!

A few days later, he did it again. 「Wolf! Wolf!」 Again the farmers ran up the hill. Again, no wolf. This time they were angry. 「Do not cry wolf when there is no wolf!」 they said.

Then one evening, a real wolf came out of the forest. The boy was frightened. 「Wolf! Wolf! Please help!」 he cried as loud as he could.

But this time, no one came. 「He is joking again,」 the farmers said. The wolf took the sheep, and the boy learned a lesson he would never forget.
