The Tortoise and the Hare

A hare could run very fast, and he was proud of it. He always laughed at the tortoise. 「You are so slow!」 he said. The tortoise said quietly, 「Let us have a race.」 The hare laughed louder. 「A race? With you? Ha!」

The race began. The hare ran like the wind, and soon the tortoise was far behind. 「I can win even if I sleep for a while,」 thought the hare. So he lay down under a tree and fell asleep.

The tortoise walked and walked. Step by step, slowly but surely, he passed the sleeping hare. He did not stop. He did not look back.

When the hare woke up, he ran to the finish line as fast as he could. But it was too late——the tortoise was already there.
